Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made this message in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
