The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five away games unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to check the score on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils duties at each end of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on goal, the manager opted for Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defence, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Everton missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans headed to the exits after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only one league goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to readjust for a simpler shot that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.

The Toffees: The team travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Spurs: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
