TikTok Grants Viewers Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Content in Timelines

Users will soon have a fresh option that allows them to reduce the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the service announced that it currently hosts over 1 billion AI videos.

Trial and Implementation

The update is being tested over the next few weeks before a global release. This advancement coincides with a rise in content created by AI, fueled by emerging video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a competing service primarily display content made by AI. A significant portion of this material is considered low-quality AI content, a label for poor-quality, factory-style content that is often absurd or surreal.

Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content produced via AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we intend to provide users the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own preferences,” commented a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The service disclosed that there are presently over a billion videos on its service identified as AI-generated. Collectively, over 100 m media items are uploaded to the service daily, making AI-generated material a limited percentage of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be able to reduce or increase the volume of AI-generated videos they view by using the “manage topic” option in the application and choosing “AI-generated content”. Further subjects that can already be modified under the filter include news, style, beauty, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s rules mandate users to label “realistic” AI-made content, and it bans malicious fake videos of celebrities or critical incidents. Any believable AI video that is not labeled can be deleted under its terms of service.

In addition, the platform will from now on apply an “AI-made” watermark to content produced via its own AI tools, or detected by an collaborative effort for recognizing artificial media. This measure is aimed to stop users from trying to evade the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

The company is furthermore launching a $2m awareness program for professionals and groups to create learning resources about ethical AI use. This initiative will support non-profit groups dedicated to training computer science.

Moderation Strategy

TikTok has defended its content review process, during controversy over plans to make redundant a large number of review team members in the UK. The company is planning to reduce 439 jobs in its user protection division in the UK capital, with labor groups and online safety experts raising concerns that humans are being replaced by machine-led review.

A trust and safety lead explained that staff-based oversight would continue to be important, but automated tools can safeguard staff by filtering out the most graphic content prior to it is viewed by humans. The platform reported a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to intervention by its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to unsafe media as rapidly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is really helping us operate efficiently.”
