"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: I also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. A host of famous supporters have also begged for the role.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals often depict them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"And thus all are welcome to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The band have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the honor isn't lost on the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a significant milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album was born from a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that odd transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics follow endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The band's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic misadventures.

One man left Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you more outrageous stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

Yet the sister act will always be their number one priority.

"We have been making music since I was four," concludes Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
