The New Mayor Pledges a 'New Era' for NYC in First Address
In a inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious commencement to his administration.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.
Defying advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he said to an enthusiastic response.
The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.
An Ambitious Policy Agenda
Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A cap on rents for about 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
