Chelsea Boss Maresca Rejects Manchester City Links as '100%' Gossip
Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has labelled recent reports linking him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who previously worked as Pep Guardiola's assistant at the Etihad, responded to the ongoing rumours about his next move.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea manager in the summer of 2024, has a contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a potential extension option.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is completely unfounded," Maresca stated. "And at this moment, there is no time for these kind of things."
He went on to explain, Primarily, because I have a contract here until 2029. And my focus, I said many times, is solely on this club and I'm very proud to be here. But again, it's speculation. One week ago I was connected to a role in Italy with Juventus. So I don't pay attention because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, presently placed fourth in the top flight, are set to face Newcastle United this Saturday in a 12:30 GMT kick-off.
Strain Following Previous Comments
Maresca's latest statement follow in the wake of he described a previous two-day spell as his most difficult since joining Chelsea.
Those original words had sparked widespread talk of a possible rift between the manager and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had since spoken with the club's sporting directors, Maresca responded, "We are in the same building, so we talk about various topics. But about the post-Everton press conference, no."
The manager however affirmed he would "absolutely" stay at the club for the coming campaign and called on the fans to keep backing the team".
In more positive news, Maresca indicated that sidelined attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could return sooner than expected, possibly available for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Analysis: Unresolved Tension
The perceived strain between Maresca and the club's hierarchy remains as an open wound that continues to create unease.
While there has been no further escalation of the situation in the open, there has also been no resolution forthcoming, creating the matter unaddressed.
The mood during these media briefings has grown increasingly awkward, raising fears it could undermine what has otherwise been a promising start to the campaign.
Chelsea's on-field position is strong: they are in the top four in the league, have qualified for the League Cup last four, and can achieve a favourable Champions League position with good results in their final games.
